- Agbabi, Patience
- (1965- )Agbabi, one of the "Next Generation" poets, was born in London to Nigerian parents and fostered from birth by a white family. She lived in Sussex and North Wales and graduated from Oxford University. In her debut poetry collection, R A W, published by Gecko Press in 1995, Agbabi uses a rap style and won the 1997 Excelle Literary Award. Her work appears in numerous journals and anthologies. "Her strength is a punchy, polyvocal delivery which juxtaposes rap with fluctuating metres and intonations without ever losing the thread," writes The Weekly Journal (from the book blurb). Some lines from "Ufo Woman" in Transformatrix (her second collection, Payback Press, 2000) vividly portray the sense of not belonging (she was asked if her color washed off ). She was featured on National Poetry Day in October 2000. Agbabi has read at key literature festivals in the U.K. and at music festivals. She has also worked extensively for The British Council, delivering her work in Europe and Africa. "The London Eye" is one of her poems on the London underground trains.Sources: Canongate Books Ltd.
